Space Matters
Be it a wallet, cupboard or house - Space Matters as time pass by. And it mattered me in case of my Hard Disk. 20GB HD (Hard Disk) which was once much more than what one need is today no more than a backup device. I wondered how i managed loads of data in that little HD all these days. And finally it got bottle necked, which made me buy a newer and bigger one. Thought of buying 80GB with a fear that my low-end system will become slow in accessing 80GB space. But as the price difference was little i opted for 120GB and finally i got 160GB at the cost of 120GB ;). I can't figure out where this hardware industry is going. I came home with 160GB of free space in my mind. But got downgraded to 128GB when i connected it to my PC. I was able to see only 128GB of total 160GB. Though the math is different, that is, manufacturers calculate 1GB as 1000 x 1000 x 1000 and whereas OS calculates 1GB as 1024 x 1024 x 1024, it should have shown ~149GB. Coz,
As per OS:
160GB = 1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 160 = 171798691840
As per Manufacturer:
160GB = 1000 * 1000 * 1000 * 160 = 160000000000
And Difference is:
171798691840 - 160000000000 = 11798691840
And 11798691840 bits = 10.98GB
So, it should show 160GB - 10.98GB = 149GB (approx).
I screamed at my fate for the loss of 21GB (149 - 128). Thought of returning it to the seller but was worried about the delay it might take in replacing the disk. Mean while, for cross verification i googled the problem and found interesting news about this problem. 128GB is the famous problem. This can be because of 2 things.
i) our BIOS doesn't support 48bit LBA (logical block addressing), because of which it shows only 128GB of any HD > 128GB.
ii) because of older OSes which does not deal with larger HDs.
There are 3 solutions for this.
a) Upgrade your BIOS with latest updates (This can cost your mother board).
b) Install WinXP SP2 or higher version.
c) Install Maxtor's Enable big disk software. But in this case you may loose data if you uninstall this software at a later point of time.
And for me solution 'b' worked out and am able to use total 149GB.
Thank God, we have Google.
